George A. Plimpton (1855-1936) was a member of the first Board of Trustees of Barnard College. He served as Treasurer from 1893 until his death. Plimpton was the primary fundraiser for Barnard. He was born at Walpole, Mass. After graduating Amherst College, he moved to New York where he worked as a salesman for Ginn and Heath, textbook publishers. In 1914 he became head of the firm.
